38 km from Hassan on the bank of the river yogachai, Belur was the capital of the Hoysala dynasty before it was moved to Halebidu. The Hoysala King vishnuvardhana constructed the famous Chennakesava Temple in 1116 to celebrate his victory over the cholas at Talakad .Dedicated to lord Krishna ,this is the only Hoysala temple still in active worship. HALEBIDU

30 KM from Hassan this Ancient Hoysala capit l founded in early 11 century as Dwarasamudra, after the lake beside which the city was established. Built by ketaladevi, the queen of ballala2,the Kedareswara Temple built in 1219 AD was the gem of architecture until a tree took root in the tower and destroyed its parts more than 70 years ago. Its 160 images set under floral toranas in the upper part of the walls are its chief attraction of the many jain basadis of Halebidu; of the three surviving, the Parsvanath is the most interesting it has 4.5 m high statue of the tirthank and the pillared hall of this temple has some exceptional pillars decorated with beadwork .The sri ranganatha temple with a 2 mhigh image of lord sleeping on the coiled serpant ,anata is wort a visit .the 11 century Dwarasamudra lake excavated and restored recently offers boating facilities Adjacent to the Hoysaleswara temple ,there is an Archaeololgical museum housing more than 1500 sculptures and inscriptions found in and around Halebidu. Of particular interest is the 6m tirthankar image excavated from a ruined thank in a jain basadi here.3 km from Halebidu on the hillock of pushpagiri are perched the temple of mallikarjuna, Vishnu and parvathi .basthihalli has another trikuta temple dating back to 1220 AD,About 3 KM away from halebidu. just 10 km northwest of Halebidu is the ancient village Belavadi dotted with temples and shrines, the most outstanding of these is the Veeranaryan Temple in the Hoysala style.
